Welcome to the Spooky ELA Resource Bundle: Volume 2!

We heard you loud and clear, ELA teachers! You will NEVER have enough resources for this spooky time of year.

And it makes sense. Not only is the genre enormously fun, but your tank is BELOW empty -- like crawling to the gas station, gripping the steering wheel, begging your car to make it just a few more feet to the pump.

That kind of empty.

And when you're running on empty, it's pretty freakin' hard to be creative.

So where does that leave you? Exhausted AND sad because you can't find the energy to pull out some creative fun for an awesome time of year for the literary community.

BUT WE HAVE THE PERFECT SOLUTION.

For the second year in a row, a collection of brilliant ELA creators have banded together as one to pool our best and most high-impact / low stress spooky season resources for you and slashed the price to make our collection accessible and affordable when you need it most.

Poetry Autopsy Activity: "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe

Help your students to finally grasp what it means to peel back the layers of challenging poetry analysis with Poetry Autopsies! In this Poetry Autopsy collaborative analysis project, students work together to first paraphrase Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem "Annabel Lee" on the surface level of a giant poster. Then, students literally peel back the layers of their collaborative poster answering higher-level analysis questions. This project is engaging, standards-based, and helps prepare students to answer questions they might encounter on high-stakes tests.

READING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Edgar Allan Poe Bell Ringer Puzzles for Secondary ELA

    Unlock a world of literary intrigue and classroom excitement with our Edgar Allan Poe Bell Ringer Puzzles. Designed specifically for middle school and high school English Language Arts (ELA) teachers, these captivating puzzles bring the works of Edgar Allan Poe to life in a way that will leave your students on the edge of their seats, eager to unravel the mysteries of classic literature. {from Read It, Write It, Learn It}

  • Gothic Madness and Power: Close Reading Macbeth and Mexican Gothic

    Analyze power, madness, and psychological horror through close readings of Macbeth and Mexican Gothic. This resource features paired excerpts, character comparisons, and thematic analysis. • Gothicism Short Fiction Extended Lesson

    This 2-3 day lesson guides students on an exploration of gothic short fiction. Excerpts include Rebecca, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and Dracula with a focused analysis on Charles Dickens’ “The Signal-man.” Students are tasked with close reading and critical thinking and will show their analysis through discussion and writing. Answer keys and writing rubric are included! {from Lit and More}

WRITING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Halloween Email Etiquette Lesson & Practice Assignment

  • Michael, or Jason, or Freddy, Oh My!:

    Students will choose between Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, or Freddy Krueger and write a 1-2 paragraph argumentative response where they argue for why their chosen killer is the best classic Halloween movie villain. They will need to present a claim, provide evidence, and explain their reasoning in a concise and focused response. {from Simply Ana P}

  • Exquisite Corpse Poem Generator - Create an “Exquisite Corpse” poem by choosing spooky nouns, verbs, and adjectives from video generators to piece your “corpse” together. The term “exquisite corpse” comes from a writing game that originated in the Surrealist movement of the early 20th century. The game involves a group of writers who each contribute a phrase or word to a collective work without being able to see what the other writers have written. The game consists of creating a poem by selecting words according to the following pattern: Adjective - noun - verb - adjective - noun. {from Mochas and Markbooks}
